Akwa Ibom State Government has reassured the public of its determination to complete ongoing erosion and flood control projects in the state.
The assurance was given by the state Commissioner for Environment and Solid Minerals, Mr. Charles Udoh, while fielding questions from newsmen after a tour of gully erosion project sites at Ikpa road and Calabar-Itu highway.
He said the state Governor, Udom Emmanuel, would leave no stone unturned to make funds available to complete the projects, describing the governor as a people-oriented and caring leader.
He commended the contractors and charged them to double their effort during the dry season.
“Erosion and flood are very enormous and costly to manage all over the world and it takes a people-oriented governor, like Udom Emmanuel, to tackle the menace of erosion and flooding in the state,” he said.
He identified one of the major causes of gully erosion as improper termination of drainages, stressing that, such negligence are threat to lives, livelihoods, properties and public infrastructure and disrupting economic activities.
He assured citizens and residents that government had taken steps to prevent future occurrence.
Earlier, the Project Manager, Nigerpet Structures Limited, Ubong Etuk, assured the commissioner that the company was working round the clock to ensure timely completion.
The project covers 17 villages in three councils of Uyo.
