LEVERAGING on its exploits in Family Medicine since 1986, Eko Hospitals, Lagos, is set to begin training of medical practitioners in Obstetrics and Gynecology (O&G).

The postgraduate programme, being the first in a private facility in the country, follows a recent accreditation by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN).

The accreditation, contained in a letter dated January 27, 2015, recognises the infrastructure and skill set available at The Eko Hospitals to train and improve capacity in O&G.

Chief Medical Director (CMD), Dr. Olusegun Odukoya, said the feat was on the heels of National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West Africa College of Physicians’ accreditation to the hospital for postgraduate fellowship training programme in Family Medicine back 1986.

The first resident doctor in the Faculty of Family Medicine was accepted in 1986 and the first fellows graduated in November 1991. The hospitals, whose Family Medicine ranks fifth in West Africa, has till date produced 15 fellows in the specialty in total and currently has 16 residents at different stages of their postgraduate training.

To further boost the training programme and provide the much needed specialist in Nigeria, the department of O&G of the hospital in 2014 applied for postgraduate training accreditation of the Faculty of Obstetrics and Gynecology, NPMCN.

Following inspection by the accreditation team, the college granted Eko Hospitals partial accreditation, to begin postgraduate residency training in O&G.

Odukoya noted that at The Eko Hospitals, supporting the Postgraduate Medical Programme is of paramount importance and the Hospital would continue to do so as it enhances the quality of service delivery, which goes a long way in ensuring that the Hospital mission statement of delivering excellent medical services is achieved.

According to him, “An organisation that embarks on training postgraduates must be at the cutting edge of service provision, research and training and these we have achieved till date.
