February 20th: World Day Of Social Justice

The World Day of Social Justice is celebrated annually on February 20th.

The celebration began in 2007 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution recognizing the need to promote social justice. The resolution stated that social justice is essential for the achievement of sustainable development and the eradication of poverty and hunger, and called for the international community to strengthen efforts to promote social justice.

The day is celebrated to raise awareness and promote understanding of the issues surrounding social justice, such as poverty, inequality, and discrimination. It aims to encourage governments, civil society, and individuals to take action to promote social justice and create a more fair and equitable society for all.

Notable things about the celebration include:

The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) leads the coordination of the celebration and publishes a report on the state of social justice in the world.
Many countries and organizations hold events and activities to raise awareness and promote social justice issues.
The theme of the celebration changes annually, with past themes including “Workers on the Move: The Quest for Social Justice”, “Closing the Inequalities Gap to Achieve Social Justice”, and “Promoting Persecuted Persons’ Rights: A Key to Social Justice.”
