FG probes bullying incident at British International School, Abuja

• School shut for three days as Police launch investigation 

Following condemnations that trailed the viral video of students being bullied at the Lead British International School, Abuja, the Federal Government, yesterday, commenced investigation into the matter.


The victim was slapped several times by another female student in the presence of other students who appeared to be part of the gang.

Condemning the incident in a statement released in Abuja by Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo, the Federal Government assured that the culprits would be brought to book.


It also stated that safety and well-being of every student is paramount.

“The Federal Ministry of Education has become aware of an online video detailing seemingly instances of bullying at Lead British International School.

“We view these incidents with utmost gravity and express our dismay and profound concern for the safety of all students within our educational establishments.

“Bullying in any manifestation contravenes the fundamental rights and dignity of our young learners.

“Accordingly, the Ministry has initiated an investigation into the matter and will work closely with pertinent stakeholders to ensure culprits are brought to book to stop such unwholesome practices.


“The paramount objective remains the safeguarding and well-being of every student and ensuring a learning environment that is devoid of any form of violence and intimidation by whosoever.
“The Ministry will henceforth ensure a vigilant monitoring of negative practices in the schools as individuals are also encouraged to report any incidents of violence and intimidation,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police command has launched an investigation into suspected gang activities and bullying at the school.

Spokesperson for the command, SP Josephine Adeh,  confirmed the development yesterday.


She said: “In a proactive response to alarms raised by some members of the public regarding videos circulating on social media depicting the bullying of students at the Leads British school, the FCT Police Command is on top of the situation and has deployed seasoned officers to the school premises for investigations and to forestall any possible breakdown of law and order”
Also, the school has been reportedly shut down for three days following the viral video.

This was announced at a press briefing attended by parents in the school premises.

It said: “In response to the disturbing viral video depicting a female student being bullied by fellow students, the school has taken definitive actions over the incident.

“The management of the school expressed its disapproval of the incident and confirmed the commencement of an investigation”.
