Foundation pushes for child domestic workers’ protection

Street Project Foundation (SPF) has stressed the need for a joint effort to address exploitative child domestic work in Nigeria. The Foundation made the call during an advocacy forum in Oworonshoki, Lagos.

The impactful stage performance delivered a poignant message, shedding light on the urgent need to address and eliminate child domestic workers’ practices in the country.

The Foundation’s innovative approach also aimed to raise awareness, urging society to join hands in the fight against the menace. Founder and Executive Director of the Foundation, Rita Ezenwa-Okoro, said that the project’s objective was to protect child domestic workers from exploitative practices that violate their rights as children, emphasising that every child is entitled to education, food, shelter, clothing, and a decent quality of life.

“The plights of child domestic workers have been invisible for so long, and the Street Project Foundation, through its ARTvocacy Movement, is throwing a spotlight on this issue so that we can influence the change needed to protect child domestic workers from harm,” she said.

Meanwhile, wife of Oba Babatunde Saliu of Oworonshoki Kingdom, Oluwabukola Mariam Saliu, who expressed concerns about those profiting from such situations, lamented that some individuals exploit the children by turning them into slaves and depriving them of educational opportunities. She condemned those who collect money from the children’s work and fail to pass it on to their families.
