Mohammed Barde

Following several complaints from the public, Imo State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Barde, has warned police officers to desist from forcing members of the public, especially youths, to submit their phones, laptops and electronic devices to them, including forcing the victims to transfer various amount of money to designated accounts.

In a statement by the command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, the CP gave the warning while meeting with the tactical team commanders in Owerri, directing that police officers should desist from doing such, including harassing, and extorting money from the members of the public, reminding them to be disciplined and stick to the rules of engagement.

He warned that any officer caught disobeying the order would be disciplined accordingly.

The statement reads: “Sequel to a series of complaints received from members of the public, especially from the youth, alleging indiscriminate harassment and illegal checking of their phones, palmtops, laptops and extortion by police officers, the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Ahmed Barde, has warned police officers on patrol and guard duties in the habit of harassing members of the public and checking their phones to desist forthwith as appropriate disciplinary sanctions will be meted against any erring officer.”

Barde implored officers of the command to exhibit professional conducts at all times, including upholding the rule of law. He, however, enjoined Imo residents not to hesitate to call the command’s emergency control room, CP Monitoring unit, or IGP X-Squad via any of the following lines: 08034773600, 08098880197, 08148024755 or 08103341610 when unjustly treated or when they observe any illegalities.
