Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, yesterday, called on Governor Sheriff Oborevweri to order authorities of the Nigerian Police to immediately dismantle roadblocks inĀ front of police formations, particularly those along Okpanam Road and Nnebisi Road, saying that it is inflicting severe hardship on citizens and residents of Asaba.

Recall that about two years ago, the Police deliberately imposed roadblocks in front of its formations in response to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) uprising.

In a statement signed by the councilā€™s Chairman, Churchill Oyowe, and Secretary, Victor Sorokwu, and made available to journalists in Asaba, NUJ noted that the continued imposition of roadblocks by the Nigerian Police in Delta State is unjustifiable and disruptive.

The union condemned the prolonged imposition of these roadblocks, especially in front of police formations, calling on the state government and the police command in the state to act swiftly and decisively to address the issue, ensuring the free movement of citizens, considering the myriad of negative consequences, including gridlock, accidents, road rage, and loss of productivity and extortion of motorists.

With the advancement of surveillance and communication technology, the union advised the police that it is feasible to effectively monitor and respond to security threats without causing undue suffering to the populace.
