OAU amphitheatre ceiling collapse

Scores of students at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun state, sustained injuries on Thursday, May 16, when rain and a whirlwind caused the collapse of the Amphitheatre ceiling.

According to reports, the students were attending lectures when the wooden ceiling fell on them.

The University spokesperson, Abiodun Olanrewaju, confirmed the incident in a statement.

“The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, led other principal officers to the Medical and Health Centre of the University and ensured that the injured students received adequate medical attention.”

Olanrewaju said the VC also accompanied two other students, whose cases required more medical attention, to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC).

He mentioned that the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Professor John Okeniyi, personally supervised the proceedings.

“The Vice-Chancellor has, therefore, appealed for calm and urged students and staff to carry out their academic and administrative activities without any untoward actions.”

Olanrewaju added that the University management had sealed off the Amphitheatre until further notice.

Meanwhile, in a statement signed by the Students’ Union President, Abass Akinremi, he urged the Federal Government to focus more on funding tertiary institutions, especially in the renovation of dilapidated buildings.

He commended the University medical team for promptly attending to the injured students, noting that the student leadership would remain vigilant in identifying potential safety hazards on campus.
