Obasanjo mourns, describes demise as shocking

The Owu Traditional Council, in Ogun State, has formally announced the passing of the Owu traditional ruler of Akinale Town, Owu Kingdom, Abeokuta, the state capital, Oba Olufemi Ogunleye.

Oba Ogunleye died on Wednesday in the United Kingdom (UK) after a brief illness at the age of 79. He is expected to be 80 in September 2024.


Meanwhile, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described the death of Ogunleye as shocking and a great loss to the entire Owu land, Ogun State and the country in general.

Obasanjo, in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, said the news of Oba Ogunleye’s death was shocking, having informed him about his travelling some weeks back in high spirit.

The former President said that the people of Owu, Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole would miss him for his resourcefulness and promotion of the cultural heritage of his homestead.

Also, the Owu traditional council, led by the Oganla Owu, Johnson Olu Fatoki, said that the Council had missed one of the erudite monarchs in the Owu Kingdom.

Fatoki described Oba Ogunleye as a “peace-loving person, a progressive and bridge builder.”
