Police probe assassination of UI professor

Oyo State Police Command, yesterday, said it has commenced investigation into the gruesome murder of Prof. Opeyemi Ajewole of the University of Ibadan by unknown gunmen.


Spokesperson for the Command, Adewale Osifeso, who confirmed the development to The Guardian, said: “The matter is under investigation. Updates would be provided accordingly, please.”

Ajewole, a Professor of Social and Environmental Forestry at the university was said to have been killed on his way home, on Monday evening, at Moniya area of the city.

His killing has thrown the University into mourning.

The Guardian gathered that his car was taken away after he was shot.

A lecturer from the institution, who confirmed the incident, yesterday, said the deceased was killed by suspected hired killers at his residence in Ibadan.

“It is true. He was killed last night while returning home. They shot him and took his car. He was my friend. I just confirmed from a member of his Faculty now,” the source said.

Also, a friend to the deceased lecturer, Olukayode Ogunsanwo, who confirmed the incident, said: “Yes. It is true. It is true.”

An official at the Public Communications Department of the university also confirmed the incident.
“Yes, it is true. But we are not sure if it is armed robbers or hired assassins.

“The incident happened yesterday (Monday). It had become a police matter,” the Public Communications official said.
