‘Raise family altar, prepare household for eternity’

Wife of the Dean of Archbishop Vining Memorial Cathedral, Ikeja, Lagos, Mrs. Mercy Folashade Adewole, has admonished parents to adequately prepare their household for eternity, saying nobody lives on earth forever. She said that the kind of teaching parents inculcate in their children including those living with them would determine where each member of one’s household will spend eternity.

Mrs. Adewole, who spoke last Sunday at the Mothering Sunday and Ladies’ Progressive Anniversary held at the Cathedral, said there are only two necessary options for every individual. The two options, according to her, are heaven and hell.

Speaking on the topic: “Equipping The Whole Household For Eternity,” Mrs. Adewole pleaded with parents to ensure that they and their households are saved.

She said: “For us not to perish, for us to have everlasting life in heaven, we need Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour.”

Citing John 17:3, Adewole said: “Eternal life is to know the only true God and Jesus Christ whom God has sent. I don’t know how many gods you know, but there is only one true God. Eternal life is not paying your tithe or building cathedral for God or coming to church regularly; it is good to do those things, but the salvation of your soul is paramount.” Going memory lane, the preacher buttressed her points with the story of the Biblical poor Lazarus and the rich man and how the former went to heaven after death and the latter ended in hell.

For spiritual growth of the households, Adewole suggested that parents should raise family altar where the entire household would gather to study God’s word and pray together. She called on Christian mothers to submit to their husbands and husbands to reciprocate by loving their wives.

“The role of parents including their children and servants have been spelt out by God and if everybody does his or her own part, there will be peace in the home. Most times, we leave our maids and children out because we do not have time for them. The journey to eternity is very serious and we have to take it very serious too.

“As we study the word, our lives are transformed, our hearts are renewed and those that have evil intention before will change. The world of God will bring us to the image of Christ. If you do not gather your family together at the family altar, how will they hear God’s word and change? Parents are preachers in their homes; they are to preach to every member of their household and instruct them on what to do. We should not be too busy not to teach our family the words of God or have family altar,” she said.

Adewole suggested that parents should fast once in a week and wait upon the Lord. She said: “Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights and that enabled him to overcome the devil, how much more you and I, who are in the flesh.”

Recall that Mothering Sunday was supposed to be celebrated on March 19, 2023, but the church shifted the event to March 26, 2023 because of the governorship and states assembly elections.
