Tinubu to inaugurate minimum wage committee

President Bola Tinubu will, tomorrow, inaugurate a negotiation committee for a new national minimum wage.  In a letter, with reference number ‘58957/S.1/T6/X’ sent to persons invited to the inauguration and sighted by The Guardian, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, conveyed the approval of the President to commence the negotiations. 
 
The letter read in part: “I write to inform you that Mr President has approved the inauguration of the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage. The inauguration will take place on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, State House, Abuja at 12.00 noon prompt. Members are to be seated by 11:30 a.m. Kindly note that a shuttle bus will be available at the pilot gate to convey members to the venue from 10.00 a.m.

“In light of the above, you may wish to contact the Secretariat of the Committee in the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission for any enquiries/ Director, Compensation on 0806 555 3550.”
 
The move, which greeted the labour centres with a welcome development, said the committee was supposed to have been unveiled in November 2023, as agreed on October 2, 2023, at a meeting with the Federal Government and labour unions.  The Guardian gathered that the inauguration is coming three months to the expiration of the current minimum wage of N30,000.
