A policy and public affairs analyst, as well as a lecturer in the Department of Political Science, University of Port Harcourt, Dr. Obinna Nwodim, has lamented that President Bola Tinubu’s policies are far from being in line with the June 12 policy, which was tagged, ‘farewell to poverty.’

The don explained that this is because, in the last one year, what Nigerians have been seeing is a drift into hardship and problems. He stated that the obvious hardship besetting the populace is a testament that the policies of the new administration, under Tinubu, are not in line with the ideals of June 12.

“Nigerians are becoming poorer by the day; even those who were rich are becoming poor with the devaluation of the country’s currency and so much economic hardship. The tax policies are also not helping matters.”

Similarly, the Ijaw National Congress (INC) has criticised the President’s speech, describing it as a mere plethora, which did not specifically address ways in which the administration can make Nigerians come out of inflation and serious economic woes.

INC’s National Publicity Secretary, Ezonebi Oyakemeagbegha, noted that 25 years after the last military regime was enough time to fix Nigeria. The INC spokesman regretted that Nigerians are now suffering more and are enslaved than during the military era.

He said: “The President in his speech acknowledged that the people and the media are now able to express themselves freely, but how will that put food on the tables of common Nigerians? What Nigerians need now are genuine steps taken to make lives easy, ensuring that food is affordable?”

While Rivers State is calm and quiet today without any activity to commemorate today, some residents have stated that the policies of the current administration are anti-people, pushing them into poverty and hard times daily.

Meanwhile, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, in a message shared by his Commissioner for Information and Communications, Joseph Johnson, reaffirmed his commitment to unity, prosperity and the principles of democratic governance.
