VC blames ‘japa syndrome’ for dearth of nursing professionals in Nigeria

Vice Chancellor, Igbinedion University Okada (IUO), in Edo State, Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye, has lamented the dearth of qualified nurses, who are leaving the shores of Nigeria in droves due to the “japa syndrome.”

Ezemonye said to address this challenge, Igbinedion University will continue to partner with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria to steady the ship of the nursing profession and by extension healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

He asserted during the 9th Professional Oath-taking/Induction ceremony of Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.N.Sc) graduates of the institution in Okada, Edo State.

Ezemonye said there is no gainsaying the fact that nurses play pivotal roles in the overall healthcare delivery system of any nation.


“Inspite of this, our hospitals are currently witnessing the dearth of qualified nurses who are leaving the shores of Nigeria in droves due to the “Japa Syndrome “.

“It is on record that over seventy-five thousand nurses have left the country in the last five years, which poses an obvious threat to the healthcare system in Nigeria.

“To address this challenge, Igbinedion University will continue to partner with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria to steady the ship of the nursing profession and by extension healthcare delivery in Nigeria. “Ezemonye said.

The Vice-Chancellor tasked the inductees to be hardworking noting that they have a critical role to play in shaping the future of the country’s healthcare through their expertise and commitment to improving lives.
