Why we endorsed Atiku for presidency, by Islamic scholars

Atiku Abubakar speaks at the PDP rally in Enugu.
Amalgamated Union of Islamic Scholars has explained that it endorsed the Muslim-Christian ticket of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State to promote national unity and cohesion.

The Ulamas, who rose from a brainstorming session in Kano State, yesterday, unanimously agreed to pitch tent with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which believes in both Muslims and Christians being together under one nation.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, leader of the group, Sheikh Abba Koki, said the council endorsed the Muslim/Christian ticket, which is an opportunity to save the country from religious disharmony.

According to him, the decision of All Progressive Congress (APC) to introduce the Muslim-Muslim ticket of Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima amounts to betrayal of the country’s confederation setting, which allows equity for both Muslims and Christians.

He added: “We have among us members of different Islamic sects, political parties and businessmen. We, as Ullamas, believe in doing things after reaching out to all those concerned. We consider national unity as sacrosanct, which we must appreciate because marginalisation of any group would be seen as an act of betrayal of trust.”
