Windstorm kills five at North East Trade Fair in Bauchi

Windstorms from last night’s rain killed five traders at the venue of a trade fair organized by the North East Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mine and Agriculture, supported by the six states of the region.

It was gathered that the rain, which started last night, killed two people on the spot, while three injured victims died at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital.

However, the Commissioner of Commerce and Industry, Mahmoud Babama’ski, speaking with the press this morning at the scene of the incident, said he was there when the incident occurred but could only confirm two casualties as of 1 a.m. on Sunday.

He said the incident “is an act of God and no one should be blamed, not even the contractor” who built the pavilion that collapsed on the traders who sought cover under it during the rain.

The Public Relations Officer of the ATBUTH said, “It is true that we received a certain number of casualties from the scene of the incident. Unfortunately, two were brought in dead, while three had severe injuries from the head to the abdomen and succumbed shortly after arrival. Currently, we have three patients with multiple fractures who are receiving treatment and are gradually improving.”
